New speed sensor will not engage speedometer 2008 Tacoma

P0500 code came up. my dog ripped the wires out of the speed sensor . I installed new sensor and connector.ECM will not clear the code. Could the wires possibly have touched and possibly blew a fuse .this is a 2008 Toyota Tacoma Prerunner V6 4 speed 2 wire sensor mounted to the transmission. once I have installed it is there a procedure I have to go through to get the ECM to recognize the sensor
