P1778 code stepper motor function

Question

I have a 08 Altima with the 2.5 4 cyl and the cvt transmission. Ever since I got the car which was maybe 5 months ago it’s had a noticeable hesitation shaking to it when you let off brake and give it gas from a stop and goes away after a few seconds when I get going. The other day I noticed it doing it way more then usual so I got home and pulled in my back yard stopped then pushed the gas and it wouldn’t go . Best way I can describe it is if your e brake is all the way on and the car is trying to go but won’t. Does same thing in reverse right before it did this if felt like it was taking off in a low gear so I had my brother bring me a diognosic reader it’s giving me the p1778 code for stepper motor Funtion .Theres some forums saying all I have to do is replace the stepper motor in the valve body . I was wondering if anyone else can help me out on if I should try Replacing the little motor before I replace the transmission and if any of y’all had problems like I’m describing with the p1778 code
