the code is p1778 the transmission no past the second .( no 3 or 4) I used normal oil no the c.v.t fluid (ns-2) could be the problem? please help.

What model and year is your Nissan? if you didn't used CVT fluid, then it's very likely that fluid may have caused the problem.

You should call your dealer. Your Altima is out of warranty, but it's only 2000 miles, it's possible that they may be able to help you with the repair. Replacing the CV transmission can be very expensive.

The P1778 code is for the CVT Step Motor. As far as I know the only solution is to replace the step motor inside the transmission, in rare occasions the problem could be the Transmission Control Module (TCM)

Most (if not all) of the transmission shops around my area don't rebuild CVT.
It's unfortunate for him, but he is going to have to have the transmission fixed. He can't blame the electrical problem because all the electrical components for the transmission are inside the transmission and that should a part of the rebuilt.

Could be an electrical problem. If is an electrical problem, unfortunately, the problem is inside the transmission.

According to the factory service manual, for that code the problem is the Step Motor which is available by it self.

Have you checked with the dealer if your Maxima is still under warranty?

My suggestion is to have the Nissan dealer inspect you Maxima.

Si, desafortunadamente parece que si sea la transmission. El P0340 es por el "Camshaft Position Sensor", pero podria esta saliendo por el problema de la trasnmission.

Everyone ( Nissan dealer , Nissan specialist , and the Mitchell ) told me the Transmission was bad and ended up changing it 3 times . With the third one on i thought it was impossible so ordered a computer with the same year and code and it ended up being that . Good luck hope this helps .

That's sounds like a transmission control module!

The TCM (Transmission control module ) next to the battery . There is a part number and two letters that are on it that must match when buying a replacement .

I am hearing some clicking/tinging when I 'gun' the '11 Quest. It may be the exhaust BUT it only happens in gear :( Nissan dealer has walk in appts for oil change but I gotta wait a week when I've diagnosed a problem GRRR!!!!!

El Codigo P1778 es de la transmision y no cause que el motor tiemble. Cocentrese mejor en los otros codigos, especialmente P0011 y P0021. El precio de la reparacion depende en el problema y a este punto todavia no se sabe cual es. Podria comensar por cambiarle el aceite y filtro del motor.

Me han dicho que es el step motor, sera?

Segun el manual de la fabrica, niguno de los dos codigos es para stp mootor. El P0448 no tiene nada que ver con la transmission, es para el EVAP system y el P0744 puede que sea el Valve Body.

Honestamente, que trate de venderlo. Con lo del codigo P1778 es posible que le tenga que cambiar la transmission y con el ruido de la cadena, es posible que le tenga que cambiar la cadena y tensionadores. Todo eso le podria salir muy caro.

I checked the harness and connector for visible damage but all was good.
I decided to purchase a stepper motor online (Amazon.ca) (oem cvt transmission stepper motor JF009E RE0F08A/B for Altima,Maxima,Murano) for approx $75.
I then pulled off the pan and lowered the value body to gain access to the motor which sits ontop of the valve body.
I notice quite a bit of metal on the pan magnets and even more aluminum shaving in the pan. I decided to replace the motor anyways and clean as best as possible before re assembling.
I reset the computer/ erased the code and road tested the car.
Although initially it was much better it then began setting a line pressure code and once again shuttering and poor shift.
Everyone suggested a used or rebuilt transmission but I wanted to give it try and confirm that it wasn’t just a $75 part. Given the mileage and noticeable amount of metal in the pan the new stepper motor replacement was not able to compensate the fix. Although the code did not return, the transmission still was not road worthy.
Nissans up to 2011 depending vin have a 200,000km cvt warranty due to their poor engineering and customer confidence. I would suggest first you check with Nissan Customer Support. If yours doesn’t apply then perform preliminary visual and harness checks.
There is a Youtube video (https://youtu.be/lOVLOgSEd7w) displaying manual voltage & resistance values should you be interested and willing to test. If all checks out positive, lastly I recommend dropping the pan and having a good look for metal fatigue and failure. If you do notice excessive metal in the pan I would then pack it up and replace the transmission. From this experience the stepper motor will not rectify the problem. (Ps. If you plan on driving to a trans shop after this inspection, I suggest you recover the old oil while pulling the pan down because cvt fluid is very expensive and if the transmission is no good then it won’t hurt to put it back in.)
If all looks good then you can order your motor and give it a try.
Note you should be mechanically incline to attempt this.

Lo primero que tienen que hacer es ver como esta el nivel del aciete de la transmision.

I live in Maryland and was giving two quotes $1400 if the transmission doesn't have to be replaced and $2800 if needs to be replace. I purchased the car (not
Nissan Dealer) and extended warranty in April 2018 for my daughter who graduated from High School, I immediately took it to Nissan to have the transmission and oil change. Then transmission started slipping in June (hesitation at take off, slow at stop lights, not going up hills, etc.) So, I took the car back to Nissan Dealer to get it service and they told me the step motor is bad and needed to replace the transmission. I know a great deal about cars, so I told them to perform an Transmission scan and let me know the codes ($130 for scan). The dealer provided me with the following codes B562, P0746, P1700, P0725, P0746, P1778 and P0868. So, I told the dealer contact the extended warranty coverage independent adjuster (IA). Then the dealer told me the IA wanted more details inside the transmission and it will cost me $500 to take apart but will be coverage if the warranty covers the problem. If not, then I would have to pay the $500.

So, after the Nissan Dealer tore down the transmission, the fluids were not dirty and absolutely no metal shavings in the transmission. But because it was an electrical component the extended warranty didn't cover the expense. It covered the transmission but not the electric components in the transmission. What? Exactly when 90% of transmissions today are electrical. So READ YOUR WARRANTIES!

Now, I was stuck with a $500 bill at the dealer and the dealer wanted to charge $4753 for new transmission. Luckily, the Nissan Service technician felt my pain and only charged me the original $130. Trust me I was happy as heck! So, now after doing my research it appears that I can just change the Valve Body (inside the transmission) since it will replace ALL the internal electrical SENSORS and most importantly there wasn't any metal shavings in the transmission. So, my plan is to purchase a new valve body roughly $900 and install myself. Like I said, I'm pretty good with repairing autos especially BMWs but going to ask the experts.

Anyway, my question for the EXPERTS should I try just changing the valve body since their wasn't any signs of metal shavings or bad fluid in the transmission?

I also planned to keep everyone posted on my results. Its a damn shame Nissan hasn't fixed this issues since it has been multiple complaints with the CVT transmission.

Yes, I have done just the valve body many times at my shop (we specialize on Nissan and Infiniti) with success. We have even installed used valve body and work OK, but if you can install a new valve body, then the chances to fix the problem are very high. One more thing, that dealer is really bad (don't want to write bad words here), they could have easily get the transmission cover by the extended warranty.

The P1778 code is for the Transmission Step Motor. The Step Motor is inside the transmission. Unfortunately, as far as I know, the Step Motor is not available from the factory as a separate part. Some people claim that the part is available on eBay, but I can verified that. If you are able to find the part, the here is a video on how to replace the Step Motor.

Si, lo mas seguro que sea el Step Motor, el problem es que el dealer no vende el Step Motor solo, hay que comprar toda la transmision. Algunos dicen que se puede conseguir en eBay, pero no estoy seguro.

Aparentemente si lo venden, ojalá que funcione.

Puede comesar por inspeccionar el nivel del aceite de transmision. Si el nivel esta bien, entoces le tendria que cambiar el "Step Motor" que esta adentro de la transmision.

On a 2011 Nissan Juke SV AWD, codes P1778 and P0746 showed. Car ran fine no problems. Then suddenly it started not shifting correct. Only drove a few miles like that then parked it for a few hours. Started back up and it would not go into any other drive speed except low. 4000 rpm 20mph slow and wouldnt shift just rev up like driving in 1st gear. About 20 mile drive home like that and would loose power on small incline. Let it set over night and then it would not move forward or reverse but so slightly. Changed the fluid and no help but did get a little shutter a couple times. Now is stuck in safe mode when in drive like its hitting the govenor at 2500 rpm. Reverse just revs. In neutral it seems to not want to rev up very fast like a car should. But this is all in a 2 day period. But cant find any part numbers Step motor and PCS a stuck off. Dont know what interchanges with the Juke as far as part numbers. Any advice or help with parts ? Thanks.

nissan x trail 08 (t31) had this error after gettng a scan tool it was stated as a step moto. before then i started up to drive and it was giving me a high rpm but jeep would be in a crawl like state 15mph with a ridiculous rev of 4k. after changing the step moto it worked flawless costed me 125us via Ebay autopart seller

Unfortunately, I have tried replacing the Step Motor by it self, but many users say it works. I think it's worth trying. Your other option is to replace the transmission assembly.

I am getting a fault code p1778. I can't pass state inspection as a result. I had an extension due to covid but really need to get it done soon. I took it to the nissan dealer and they didn't find anything wrong after doing a full diagnostic and me leaving the car there overnight. They told me to drive it at least 100 miles then take it back to inspection. Went back to inspection and failed again. Is it possible that leaving an OBD code reader plugged in (accidentally) and driving with it in coud cause this issue? (Once I realized it I took it out) If so how do I correct it?

Did you clear the codes before disconnecting the OBDII code reader? what was the reason the smog failed, you got the same code or because the monitors were not ready?

I cleared out the codes but then neglected to remove the reader and drove around with it plugged in. State inspection (Massachusetts) gave me a not ready on catalyst and evaporative system.

This is what they told me to do. Do I need to wear a shirt that matches the color of the car too?

rive Cycle for OBDII Monitors

Pre-Conditioning Requirements:

Ensure the MIL (malfunction indicator lamp) is not on.

Ensure gas tank fuel level is between 15% and 85% at all times.

Drive cycle must start while engine is cold. Best performed in the morning and after being parked overnight. The actual requirement is that the engine be between 68 and 86 degrees F prior to the start of the drive cycle.

Drive Trace:

A. Start your Nissan and idle engine until coolant temperature reaches 160F (until normal operating temperature is reached).

B. Using a timer, idle the engine for an additional 1 1/2 minutes.

C. Begin driving. Accelerate smoothly to 56 mph with the transmission in (D) and overdrive ON, then release gas pedal and coast for 10 seconds.

D. Accelerate to 56 mph and maintain speed for at least 10 minutes. Use smooth and quick acceleration and maintain speed as constant as possible.

E. Stop and idle your Nissan Altima for 10 seconds.

F. Accelerate to 25 mph in 10 seconds and hold gas pedal steady for 20 seconds. Use smooth and quick acceleration and maintain speed as constant as possible.

G. Repeat steps E and F eight (8) times. Decelerate (coast down) to 15 mph and then drive for 13 minutes at speeds between 15mph and 35mph.

H. Accelerate to 53-56 mph and maintain speed for at least 6 minutes. In this step it is more important to maintain accelerator pedal position than speed. Therefore you are allowed 3 mph fluctuation in speed, but must try and keep the gas pedal steady.

- End of Drive Cycle -

If all emissions systems are functioning properly, completing the drive cycle above will set the emission monitors (also known as readiness flags) required to pass the smog check. We recommend performing the drive cycle at least twice before visiting a smog check station

After you cleared the codes, all monitors are reset (Monitors, in other words, are the test the ECM makes to make sure all the components are working correctly). Just drive your vehicle for half an hour on the freeway, and you will be fine, and make sure you wear a Red and Blue shirt ;).
At least you no longer have the P1778 code.

Hola, tengo un Nissan Cube del 2010, me acaba de aparecer el codigo P1778. A veces cuando ago alto oh estoy en un semaforo en rojo. Al acelerar el cubo no quiere dar. Se queda parado como por unos 4 o 5 segundos le piso el pedal de la gas asta el fondo y no quiere dar, y despues empiesa acelerar bien. No me pasa en cada alto oh en cada luz roja pero se prendio el foco con ese codigo. Busque informacion acerca de ese problema y muchas personas dicen que le cambie el step motor otras dicen que se tiene que cambiar la transmision y pues eso sale muy caro. Si le cambio el step motor podra areglarse el problema o me recomiendan entregarlo ala agencia por otro carro?

Si, es posible que cuando cambie el setep motor arregle el problema. Todo depende cual es la condicion de la transmision, y eso desafortunadamente no se puede saber hasta que cambie el step motor.

I replaced my catalyst converter because it was damaged and I paid to have it replaced and I did a diagnostic check before it was fine and that was the only code and the only problem with my car... It was just too loud although, everything else was perfect. Change the oil every 3mo. our 3000 miles etc. Ones the mechanic fixed the catalyst converter the nose stopped but, as soon as I driver a few miles and the engine was hot and still running. The cast w gain speed, it would get gas but it's wouldn't go any faster... As I continued to proceed to my destination, once if so at a light etc. My car wouldn't even register no matter how far I pushed them has decelerator down it wouldn't get any gas. I thought it may be the transmission because it would change gears on tinder but, of it was the trans my car would still have revved up, it just would've not changed gears of gained does but, I still would've heard my engine getting gas when I ordered the accelerators. Therefore, it had to be something that accured after the mechanic replaced the converter because the codes never showed up until after it was replaced... Although they refused to fix it and acknowledge the fact that they caused the problem somehow. So, that's why I'm trying to find out any and everything that's cause those codes to show up during the diagnostic check because the didn't show up before and I showed them the paper with the codes before the touched it and after. Nevertheless, their gonna pay for it or fix it plus pay for mental anguish and let off monetary gain because of it... But the P0420 code stated it has to do with lost pressure from a faulty catalyst converter, Smh go figure that's all the proof I needed to know they were responsible.

P1778 code in a Nissan Quest. All I’ve seen are Altima and Murano mentions…and a few others, but nothing about the quest minivan.

Car seems to operate fine when cold. After it warms up it begins to not accelerate after stops. Occasionally it shakes like it’s trying to grab or get into gear… will replacing the stepper motor fix this? Mechanic says there are no electrical issues.

Depends on many other things, year, mileage, and the usage you have given to your Quest. With low mileage vehicles and if the code is P1777, I do recommend replacing just the stepper motor, but with the code P1778 could be either the stepper motor or the valve body. Unfortunately, my only recommendation is to have a transmission shop inspect your Quest.

The stepper motor is failing, and eventually you must replace it. I haven't tried replacing the Step Motor by itself, but many users say it works. I think it's worth trying. Your other option is to replace the transmission assembly.

I had a P1778 code on my 2012 Nissan Quest so I ordered a stepper motor. After installing the stepper, as well as replacing the filter and gasket, I reinstalled everything but not my van won't move. It will cycle through the gears just fine, but it doesn't respond to any of the corresponding gears.

I dropped the transmission pan again and made sure the ratio control valve arm was still hooked onto the stepper arm and it was so I thought maybe it was a fluke and reinstalled everything. Still wouldn't budget.

I dropped the pan for a 3rd time and decided to just reinstall the original stepper. Before I decided to replace it, the van ran fine, it would just be slow to start upon accelerating. So I figured I might just get the van back to it's original running self. However, upon reinstalling the old stepper motor and getting everything installed back on, the van still wouldn't move.

Does anybody have any clues as to why it won't respond to it's corresponding gears? I really am out of ideas here. Please help!
