Will not haveing a shunt make my check eng light come on?

I have a 199 ford f350 4x4 dully desile with 7.3 powerstroke turbo i live in calif. I noticed after haveing truck in shop the shunt was gone would this throw a code if so what on and whats the importance of a shunt. Aslo will that cause my check eng light come on?
