The car will over heat but it will not read that it is over heating

Vehicle: 2006 Dodge charger 2.7

Hi there

This could indicate a problem with the coolant temp sensor. I would replace that sensor and if the gauge doesn't work properly then its a wiring issue or a problem with the instrument cluster.
