I bought  x 5   2001  bmw    it  was sold to me  I did  not  know  I could  not  ass  smog  I am thinking  it  was smoged illegaly   codes p2098

P2098 this is common on the BMW what this is is a lean condition after the catalytic convertor.be ready to chase the wind for this code.from the front 02 sensor causing this problem , to a reprogram of the ECM. the most common of the cause is the VANOS, Do yourself a favor where the brake master cylinder is after a rain or a storm water tends to build up there if the drain hole ever gets plugged with debris, there rainwater get sucked into the intake by means of the brake booster and create a misfire condition and even exibits a headgasket. , or even a PCV valve anything that causes the engine to hydrolock  it shift the VANOS bolt loose.
