why i got wrong trans temp readings.

Question

trans temp lights on.
checking on scanner temp gives 155
shut down the engine and starts again the reading gives 88.
what might be the reason.
each time i go uphills i had a problem to go back to the 1st shift unless i do it manually by shifting to position L
