P0420 2001 Toyota Camry - check engine light is not on

ok catylyst sensor not ready when checked, engine check light not on drove car around plenty of times and took car to smog place directly afterward. still states not ready for smog

Catalyst not ready, Most emission test center will tell you to drive it 50 miles, the reason they this is somewhere within that 50 miles of driving you would meet the criteria of meeting  the drive cycle needed for the ECM to test the catalytic. The other possibility of the catalytic not being ready is there is a pending code, so that area should be check. Unless your scan tool has mode $06 you can see how may times the catalytic has been tested and if is going to pass for the readiness.
