what causes transmission to shift from 5th to 4th

when transmission is in tow mode and pulling a travel trailer it downshifts from 5th gear to 4th gear, the engine light will come on and the transmission will lock down in 4th gear and not come out until you stop the vechice and cut it off and let set for a few minutes.
