Bought a 2002 Rav4 2 months ago with about 120K miles. Had it THOROUGHLY checked by 2 shops (both trusted) and had a few things fixed. No mention of problem with cats. 1 month ago got the common RAV4 auto transmission ECM error code and replace the ECM with a rebuilt (existing ECM was also a rebuilt; had an aftermarket company sticker on it.) Passed CA smog easily a week ago (low speed HC was 38 /max is 58; high-speed HC was 5/max is 42; low-speed CO% was .24/max is .73; high-speed CO% was .20/max is .88; low-speed NO was 47 ppm/max is 575; high-speed NO was 231 ppm/max is 798).

Now daughter is driving it 1000 miles to college less than 400 miles in the check engine light goes on. Two shops read the P0420 and P0430 codes (Catalytic system below thresholds-banks 1 and 2). They reset the code and is stays off off for a couple hundred miles but comes on again.

Hard to believe the cats (either or both!) really need replacement due to the information in first paragraph. What might cause these codes? Is there some sort of reflash we should have had done on the ECM? Any other obvious cause in a car that was just gone over with a fine tooth comb by two shops?

Vehicle: 2002 Toyota Rav4 2-liter, 4-cylinder, 2WD
