Code P144E Description

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Cooler Bypass Valve is used to redirect the EGR gases around the cooler when the engine is under certain operating conditions. The EGR Cooler Bypass Valve is a smart device which communicates it's status to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). At key on the EGR Cooler Bypass Valve drives the signal line low and then high and the PCM monitors for the correct status response from the EGR Cooler Bypass Valve. Throughout engine operation the PCM sends commands via the signal circuit to the EGR Cooler Bypass Valve and monitors the status line to confirm that the EGR Cooler Bypass Valve has reached the commanded position. When a fault occurs, the EGR Cooler Bypass valve will send a signal of less than one Volt on the status line to the PCM. This monitor is a one trip fault.

Frequently Asked Questions about P144E Code

1. What does the OBDII code P144E mean?

P144E indicates a problem with the EGR Cooler Bypass Status Line Circuit, specifically reporting a low voltage condition.

2. What are the symptoms of a P144E code?

Common symptoms include reduced engine performance, increased emissions, poor fuel efficiency, and possible activation of the check engine light.

3. What causes the P144E code to appear?

The code can be triggered by a faulty EGR cooler bypass valve, damaged wiring or connectors in the circuit, or a malfunctioning EGR temperature sensor.

4. Can I drive with a P144E code?

Driving with a P144E code is not recommended as it can lead to increased emissions, engine inefficiency, and potential long-term damage to the EGR system.

5. How do I diagnose the P144E code?

Diagnose the code by inspecting the EGR cooler bypass valve, testing the wiring and connectors for damage or corrosion, and using a multimeter to check for proper voltage in the circuit.

6. What repairs are needed to resolve a P144E code?

Repairs may include replacing the EGR cooler bypass valve, repairing or replacing damaged wiring, cleaning corroded connectors, or replacing a faulty EGR temperature sensor.

7. How much does it cost to fix a P144E code?

The repair cost depends on the exact issue but typically ranges from $100 to $400, including parts and labor.

8. Can a dirty EGR system cause the P144E code?

Yes, carbon buildup in the EGR system can obstruct the bypass valve, leading to improper operation and triggering the code.

9. Will clearing the code with a scanner fix the P144E issue?

Clearing the code does not fix the underlying problem. Proper diagnosis and repairs are necessary to prevent the code from reappearing.

10. How can I prevent the P144E code from occurring?

Regular maintenance of the EGR system, including cleaning the valve and ensuring proper operation of related components, can help prevent this code.
