Code P0037 Nissan Description

Oxygen Sensors (O2S) or Heated Oxygen Sensors (HO2S) need to reach a minimum operating temperature of 750 degrees F to produce an accurate voltage signal. The faster the heated oxygen sensor reaches that temperature the faster the sensor will start sending an accurate signal to the Engine Control Module (ECM).
In order to achieve the require temperature, a heater element is included inside the heated oxygen sensor. The ECM controls the heated oxygen sensor heater element based on signals from the engine coolant temperature and engine load. The ECM controls the heater element circuit by allowing current flow to ground.
The ECM monitors the voltage signal received through the heater element circuit and determines the state of the circuit by comparing the voltage detected with the factory specifications.

  • My understanding is Nissan put out a recall letter for this fault, and I believe that they replaced the wiring.
    But when I drove away from that service it came back again (the fault light). My OBD2 connecter said its the same issue - P0037

  • There is a recall to reprogram the Engine Control Module (ECM).
    On some models the ECM will not detect problems with the O2 sensors, and reprograming the ECM will fix that. In you case is different because there is a problem with the O2 sensors and the ECM did detected the problem. The O2 sensor should be cover under warranty. I recommend take it back to the dealer.

  • Could you be more specific on "driving bad"? The P0037 code is for the Rear Oxygen Sensor, but a faulty sensor will not cause an engine performance problem.

  • It is stalling when I accelerate. The RPM is jumping all over the place and the car jerks at take off. The only code that comes up is the P0037. Not sure what is wrong.

  • There must be something else, I have never seen an Oxygen Sensor causing the engine to stall. If there are no other codes, then my only suggestion is clearing the code and trying a different type of gas. Try high octane gas and if possible, add a fuel additive.
