What could cause a P0403 on a 2005 Ford/Ranger 3.0U when the truck is not equipped with a EGR valve?

Check engine light came on and scanner indicated it was a P0403 but this Ranger is not equipped with a EGR valve. How can there be a fault with a EGR?
