What does it mean when OBDII shows only E and no code?

I have two Volvo's 1997 850. On both cars "check you engine" light came on almost at the same time. I use OBDII reader and it shows E without any numbers. After 3-4 trys light went off and came back on after driven 120 miles.
What does it mean, code E?
