On my 2001 Nissan Sentra, Is the air-fuel sensor normally referred to as an o2 sensor?

Yes, they are very much the same part, but because one reads different then the other they have different names. The a/f sensor is more complex, but it is still refered to as an O2 sensor. This is wrong of course, but it is still refered to as such.
