Cars temp shot up a few weeks ago while my son was driving, and was steaming, found low coolant level. We topped off and took to mechanic, they found that the T hose was leaking bad and also said there was some sign of leakage at oil cooler. We had the T hose replaced and coolant filled and the car drove great for the next few weeks. Again, temp shot up, steaming and it stopped on him. We tried to restart with no luck.

We were worried that maybe the oil cooler leak caused additional issues to engine/trans. In shop now, mechanic is saying the engine/trans is not problem since they were able to test if crank. They can communicate with computer but car wont start. They believe it may be TIPM related but need my go ahead to start diving into pins/connectors etc.

We hoped to keep car running for another year before selling, now i just dont know if its worth putting more money into it. Being told it could be a few more hrs of labor to test, ~$300 and that if it is TIPM issue it could be in the ~$1500-2000 market.

Also, they advise of following codes: P0117, P06DD, P0197, P1DD2, U1424, U0100, P1B13-00 and P1915.

Any thoughts, dive in to look at fix or look at salvage?

Not mechanically inclined to dive into work myself, Thanks.

Any thoughts, dive in to look at fix or look at salvage?

You can put a limit on how much time they should inspect your vehicle, just checking all the fuses shouldn't take that long. The TIPM or any other control module, usually does not go bad when the engine overheats. Have they checked what is missing for the engine to start? fuel or spark? Have they tried clearing all the codes? what code(s) comes back first?

These two codes were set because the engine overheated

The following codes are transmission related codes, may not be related to the no start problem

Thanks for the info, alot to consider and still unclear if we want to move forward.

The shop said the codes are current, so I assume they cleared any old ones out from tow etc.

Unclear how you check if engine/trans is seized but they did say its not that, that its electrical.

Concerned that they will start down a road checking for electrical, but can it still be mechanical and they wont see until diving in.

Thanks again.

I agree, it is concerning that it may be something bigger than what it looks like. As a mechanic, knowing the condition and type of problem of the vehicle, I always make suggestions to my customers about what they should do. Either try to fix the vehicle or sell it. My only suggestion is to talk to your mechanic or get a second opinion.
