What does a transmission control module do?

I'm trying to find out what I need to change on my transmission for better shifting. Is shifting hard. I took the pan off, no pieces of aluminum broke off. And the tranny isn't burnt, how do I get it shifting right again?

You have a 4WD vehicle the harsh shifting could just be the driveshaft, right at the rear propeller shaft if there is excessive friction you can have the harsh shift event
