A 1/4 inch hose had come off the male port on the enclosure. If that was the cause of the P0420-code that caused the check engine light to come on, will the check engine light eventually go off when the hose was reattached?

HI there

It can affect the engine and fuel mixture which in turn can cause the code for the catalytic converter. Any air in the system AFTER the mass air flow sensor will cause a problem with the fuel mix. If it's the issue then the light will eventually go off. I would clear the code and see if it comes back, that's quicker. As for what the hose is used for, I can't be sure to be honest.
