will the sift solenoid cause car not to engage into forward gear

Question

trans is not engaging in forward gear or slipping it goes into reverse though I also have a code the vehicle speed sensor. 2004 pontiac grand am

Shift solenoids will wear out as seen often in cars like intrepids but those symptoms usually are stuck in gear like 2nd. Slippage is not good. Check fluid and maybe flush if needed.
