I have a 2000 Saturn SL1 1.9l with P0300 code

Question

When I pulled the 1 and 4 plugs they were black but the 2 and 3 plugs were fine and to me it looks as if the egr was replaced before there must be something else causing this to happen. By the way the engine when started wants to jump out of the car from misfiring so bad. It has a hard start and the rpms jump from around 900 - 1100 or more then drops to 300 - 400 before turning off. So the head gasket or catylitic converter wouldn't have anything to do with what is going on with the misfire?

The firing order for this engine is 1-3-4-2,  So this makes 1-4 run off the same ignition coil pack.
