Acceleration issues

My 2000 Mercedes c230 - Whenever I step on the gas to pass somebody the car chokes sputters and goes onto limp mode running on three out of four cylinders. So I gotta pull over, turn the car off and restart it. The car runs fine and on all four. Soon as I romp on it again, repeat.
