Alternator is good.  Will not charge the battery.  I think the PCM is not working correctly.
Vehicle: 2001 Dodge Dakota 4.7L

If you replace the PCM then yes you will need to reprogram the PCM with the VIN and mileage. with out programing the PCM the engine will not start, even if the vehicle does start the transmission will not shift correctly.
