Service engine soon light came on while driving

Code p0401 detects possible EGR VALVE problem, my car is running fine with no noticeable problems so far. Will this problem damage my engine? And what does EGR valve do?

HI there,

This won't usually cause any damage to the engine. The code itself indicates the egr isn't working properly, however it could be the egr solenoid or the egr tube causing the code. If the tube is plugged up, then the egr won't work properly and the code will appear.

EGR is Exhaust Gas Recircluation. Basically at certain times the egr will open and add exhaust to the fuel mixture. This can cool the cylinders down and also help with the hydrocarbons.
