How important is the cam shaft position sensor?

The vehicle still runs but seems sluggish from take off, but after about 3500 rpms it clears up and takes off?? Any help?

You can be facing a mechanical problem , where at 3500 the engine is at its optimum. The camshaft position actuator are known for its problem where it sluggish at take off with out setting a camshaft actuator code.
