why would auto transmission work one minute and not the next ?

drove about ten miles and came to a stop . after leaving the stop sign about a hundred feet it felt like it went into natural but was still in drive but was able to get it home as it would grab enough to keep going . transmission has 67000 miles and has never even hinted of a problem . put in new battery just prior to this problem .
