My mechanic says its either malfunction of front O2 sensor or rear O2 sensor (Cat Convertor temp sensor).
Vehicle: Mitsubishi Pajero 2002 V65 3500cc GDI Gasoline

Yes it can be a problem with the 02 sensors, If the front 02 sensor is correctly cycling from lean to rich , you can have failing rear 02 sensor , that can set a false catalytic convertor code condition.
