What is code 311 in volvo 1995 960 model?

Question

I have a 1995 Volvo model 960 6  cyl station wagon. Recently, every 2 months while driving, all of a sudden the engine dies on me, at this time, all the dash lights trn on and the vehicle stops. I wait for a few minutes then start it again and continue driving. Ooother times, during driviving, the engine hesitates or like getting sluggish, as f it is out of gasoline, again the dash lights turn on and  it stops so I have to restart it again. Other times, while driving, I see the upward shift light.
I checked the Ecu by inserting the the test lead into number 2, I get 311 code. I appreciate any responses for the above issues.
