P0455 Mazda - 1999 B2500 was stored without battery for several years. In Ca so have to smog for new tags. Shop told me the computer was reset and I would have to drive it 50 miles to reprogram computer. Drove 50 miles and all sensors cleared except evap. I drove another 50 miles and EVAP failure was still there. Told me I would have to let engine cool down and drive it a couple days before signal is good. Have 1 day permit to drive vehicle. Does this make sense? Could there be an EVAP problem that needs to be fixed instead of me driving around without a pos result?

Vehicle: 1999, Mazda/Ford, B2500/Ranger, 2.3 liter

P0455 Evaporative emission control system (Large leak Detected)

This vehicle in California will require a evopartive  emission test through the fuel tank. Having P0455 most emission shop already know you have a EVAP leak. In order for the EVAP system to run the fuel gauge has to be from 3/4 to 1/4. If the fuel tank is filled more than 3/4 the EVAP monitors will not run. If the fuel tank is less than 1/4 the EVAP monitors will not run. If you vehicle is having a hard time setting the EVAP monitor you may have a code in the pending code are that is not fully matured. Having a P0455 you can probably smell the raw fuel .

Mazda and Ford have one common leak at the EVAP area, and this deals with the fuel fill hose, such as this Mazda , here the fll hose deteriated either at the top or right at the fill hose to the fuel tank area is where the common EVAP leak occurs. This Mazda had the same scenerio the EVAP monitor would not set.just doing a visual inspection at the fuel fill hose the reason was obvious. Plus you can smell the  gas.
