2001 Montero Sport 3.0 error code p0340, camshaft position sensor.

Question

I changed plugs, valve cover gasket, intake gaskets, wires and truck restarted perfectly. Drove for about 15 miles and the truck began to hesitate...shut off with low idle. I figured with ECU reset, throttle had to reset idle so restarted several times until it idled well, then ran AC with lights on. Idle was good. Took it out on the highway and ran like a champ but suddenly losses of power spurts...checked codes and got p0340 camshaft position sensor, which is new. Parked truck. Shut it off and now it won't start.

It sounds like there might be a timing belt issue. You need to pull the cover and check that the belt didn't jump time. If it did, then things will be out of sync and it will set a code for the cam sensor. If the belt broke then the cam won't turn either and the same code could appear.

The belt is not broken. Would you have a reference to a check timing procedure or is it something I can just see? Would I have to remove anything to get to the cover? The cam belt covers aren't so hard to get to. I got them off to do the valve gaskets and plugs. There was not a misfire code or timing code. Only p0340.
