I have a 1998 Honda Civic Lx 4 cylinder car that started showing signs of it's current problem about three or four months ago. Sometimes when I would stop the car at a stop light of stop sign it would feel like it wanted to die or it would feel like it would have a hard time going from stop and would shimmy and feel as if it wanted to die. As of the last month or so it has died a bit more and more when at a complete stop or it would die part way after entering an intersection. Fortunately I could start it back up with no problems. Some days it seems worse than others.

I had my check engine light go off a while ago and did a diagnostic check and got the P1381 and another code that no longer shows on it, " I can not remember code" but it was for a misfiring cylinder, though it did not say which one it was. I was told by some people the cylinders had nothing to do with the other problem and was made to believe that nothing would come from that.

None the less I am in the process of giving the car a tune-up, I have new spark plugs to put on it and a new air filter has been put in it. I also will get my oil changed once this other problem is taken care of. That is if the expense of this other problem is not too high.

I thought maybe I had a clogged up or bad fuel filter so I checked on a fuel filter only to find out my car does not have one. I was told my problem could be the fuel regulator.

Anyway, I need to know if this position sensor is the culprit and if so how much money am I looking at in regards to taking care of the problem? I saw where it looks like an electrical issue and from what I have heard from others in regards to electrical problems like this the expense is usually quite high.

Anything you could tell me would be much appreciated.

     Thanks, Garrett D Linger

P1381 Intermittent interruption in the cylinder interruption (CYP) sensor circuit

Doing the tune up first would be the first step, the reason for the perfroming a tune up is P1381 does not cause the engine to stall out Stalling out at a stop can set a P1381 as a result of stalling..P1381 even though this is a popular code condition for a Honda engine it was mostly traced as be a alternator current causing the code to appear . the other cause would be a shield for the ignition coil not installed.

Check inside the distributor for the coil shield a missing would would definetly set a P1381.
