I'm realizing the problem in the middle of a trip and would rather deal with it when I get home than have to leave the car out-of-state. The check engine light is on, but the car is switching gears as it normally does and running fine.

Vehicle: 2004 Audi A4 Quattro 1.8T (4 cylinder)

P0706 Malfunction transmission range (TR) switch

This code condition would apply to both the CVT and the 5 Speed AT. In both cases the TR switch and the TCM is where the fault originates from, If you drive the vehicle you would set a speed sensor code, the only fix for this condition is to replace the TR switch and the TCM (transmission control module) and make doing this and having this code a hobby.

 Some Audi transmission models have this connection here on the top back part of the transmission, if there any leak here it can affect the transmission controls
