P0401 Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) flow insufficient detected

The best action to take is to see if the EGR is working , and if the EGR flow is plugged.

 On a Ford EGR system it would consist of a  EGR valve, a EGR vacuum transducer, and a EGR back pressure transducer,

 Start with the EGR vacuum transducer, There will be 2 vacuum hose attatched , one of the vacuum hose there should have  vacuum during idle, and the other should not have vacuum. Remove the cap of the vacuum transucer.

 Place you finger or object over the valve on the inside and this should open the EGR valve, and the engine should stumble.or rough idle. If it does not the EGR valve can be ruptured or its passage could be plugged.

 This method determines if the EGR valve is working, and determines if the EGR passage is plugged. with a fine probe its passageway is cleared, you may just have to remove the throtttle body to truely clear the EGR passage.
