I just bought this car it has a little over 200,000 miles. The car is really clean everything was fine until the emissions control system light came on and now when I'm driving it sputters every now and then. I tightened the fuel cap but the light remains on. Is this a serious problem and what do I need to do also how much do you think it will cost me to fix it?? Thanks for your help!

Checking the code is the first step that should be done, so this way you would know what your going to repair, When there is a sputter or a hesitation check when was the vehicle tune up.

Most of the sputter that occur on a engine are usually with the igntion system such as worn sparkplugs or worn wire and even the cap and rotor, Waiting for a CK ENG LT to come on then doing a tune up is really not pratical. The best way is to do preventive maintance, If you do not have a tune up schedule now would be the time to set one. even if you bought the car, a through inspection should be done. You may just be able to go another 200,000 miles
