check engine light fault is due to the gas sensor fault

dealer said I need to change the gas cap assembly an 800$ job, I tried to reset the trouble code by following one of the suggestion in the forum but I ended up clearing all ECM information so car failed inspection, how do I reset just the fault code and not clear all the ECM info ?

Vehicle: Nissan Maxima 2002
