What causes a p0016 code on my 2007 kia?

My Kia's steering was locking up on me when I first started the engine. This went on for about 2 months. It didn't lock up every time, but 95% of the time. While the steering problem was happening, whenever I turned left the steering was difficult and the battery light would come on. I had the power steering flushed, didn't change anything. So, I had the power steering pump changed, it didn't change anything the first day afterwards. The second morning, no problems with steering, no battery light coming on either. Two days ago the steering locked up, but the temperature outside had dropped. Yesterday and this morning, no problem at all. Today I start it up to go home from work, the engine light comes on. The light stayed on, so I took it to get an analysis. The code was a P0016. Do you think that my steering problems and the battery light issue have a correlation with the crankshaft sensor?

This code here for a 2.0 Kia Sportage is more for the variable valve timing on the exhaust side, dealing with the OCV (oil control valve). What you have is 2 seperate condition , one is where the powersteering is locking up. The worst that can happen when the Powersteering is gets  lock up is the drive belt gets rip up. P0016 is more  for the OCV and this is a common problem with the KIA. The problem that you describe especially it getting difficult turning left. is more for the rack n pinion.

This OCV or Variable valve timing when it is faulty it causes rough idle, poor acceleration,and camshaft misalignment and even misfire conditon. This Oil control valve that causes P0016 and P0018 are popular code for the KIA,  the fix replace both OCV for the intake and the exhaust side. and make it a hobby in replacing.
