my daughter has a 1997 chevy cavelier with only 48,000.
we just had a new muffler put on the car along with a whole new pipe. Now the check engine light is on and it says P0141 which I believe is the O2 sensor. dod I fix this myself or have a mechanic look at it (the same one who did the muffler job)?

P0141 -02 sensor heater circuit malfunction Bank 1 Sensor 2

This is for the downstream 02 sensor or the catalytic monitor  sensor. which is behind the catalytic convertor, it is possible it just did not get re-connected. Take this back to the  shop that put the muffler on. and have them check to see if it was reconnected. Now it is also possible when it was being welded on the vehicle for  some shop to  disconnect the battery or  install a surge protector on the battery and not disconnect the battery. If the 02 sensor rear is connected and the battery was disconnected during the service for the muffler. disconnecting the battery caused the memory of the PCM to get erased and the PCM had to relearn its parameters. and did not accept the rear 02 sensor heater condition as proper. If this is the case it is unfortunate the only fix would be a new rear 02 sensor.
