P0701 Audi - any ideas , gear box goes into limp or stops working then fine when restarted

Please help I have an audi a3 and at least once a day the auto drag 6 speed box goes into limp mode then I can normally turn it off and restart and it's fine

P0701 Transmission control system range performance

The only known fix is to replace the direct shift, what happens is the travel sensor is out of range.
