van has difficulty shifting into drive

98 dodge caravan has problems engaging when i shift into drive, but when it does engage it drives great. what what would cause this? the engine light is on.

What you have is a transaxle delayed gear engagement, there are number of causes for this , check the transmission fluid level. this would be the first step, and also the code that is give should be pulled and the diagnosis of what your up against would be known.
