At one time vehicles had throttle cable for the acceleration and a T.V cable for the transmission downshift cable both attatched to the throttle body, and the cable moved in opposite direction. Now with todays system which this is the Drive by wire system . nothing changed just the electronic added to the throtttle body , for acceleration one of the APP goes from low voltage to high the engine management uses this to determine throttle opening and fuel injection and spark timing, As for the APP that goes from high to low voltage this is used by the transmission to determine torque .
