I've recently had a new key cut and a few days later when driving down the motorway the engine has cut out. The key company claim it is an electric fault and the key would have nothing to do with it cutting out when running. Is this true?

Yes. A faulty key will not cause the engine to stall. Once the engine start the key has no function. You can even remove the key from the car and the engine will not stall.
