what is the problem when the check engine light blinks 4 times or 10 times or 13 times or 18 times?

along with the check engine light blinking, the cruise control will "kick off". all this happens intermittently and does not seem to effect preformance---i still am getting 25 to 28 mpg on a tank of gas!!
