I got the check engine light on yesterday and got the P0420 code from O'reilly. My car is not running bad. I have recently changed spark plugs, ignition coils, air filter, and my oil change is approaching soon.
I have read something about O2 sensors, or even catalytic converter. What should I do? a new Cat is very expensive.

HI there,

In most cases the converter ultimately is the actual repair. That being said, I normally clear the code first and see if it comes back. Many times, especially after a major tune up you are changing the way the car runs so sometimes clearing the code is enough. If you clear it and the code comes back, then you will need a scan tool that can see the live data from the rear O2 senosr. This will determine if the car needs a rear O2 sensor or a catalytic converter.
