Hi - I have a 2005 Ford Explorer. Transmission fluid leaked caused black smoke during driving on freeways. Technician told us that the torque converter and transmission pump need to be replaced. They took a week to replace them, flushed and refilled the transmission fluid. I was not sure they have tested it after the repair. But I drove it and felt the gear switch was not smooth and different than before repair. While after waited for a traffic signal, pressed the gas padal a bit more to speed up, the message 'check transmission' displayed in message center and 'O/D OFF' light was blinking and battery light blinked. Pulled over and stopped engine. Restarted engine after 5 mins, no light/message on the board. Drove to one ford dealer and left the vehicle there. They tested and told the batter light was back on, they got P0732 code after connected to computer. They told that there was a close out inside the transmission and needs over haul or replacement of transmission. We doubt the conclusion they have made us. The transmission was in good condition before the repair. We really doubt the problem it's showing now must relate to the torque converter and pump been replaced. We are not expert and hope can get expertise to help us with a sound diagnosis. Appreciate!

P0732 2nd gear ratio error

To begin with when transmission fluid leaked the transmission gets low transmission fluid, not only does this affect  shiftng operation, but the transmission can overheat causing the servo .Internal damage which  could of been set and gone without notice. The transmission that is in the Explorer  has problems with the convertor housing leaking out through the transmission vent, The fix was to reprogram the PCM.What make this difficult is P0732, any gear ratio error will cause the O/D to flash, You need to have the shift solenoid check for a shortage, the reason is the blink of the battery light

Thanks for your reply! I got some more questions...
1. Does this problem has absolute nothing with the pump&torque converter replacement at all?
2. The guy in ford told us this code P0732 was explained that part of transmission was closed out and not getting enough fluid. Need over haul. Does it make any sense?
3. Why you came up with reprograming the PCM? Is this the first fix we shall try before open up the transmission? All involves the labors. We wanted to make sure we should use the right solution to start with, not wasting money to check this and that and finally got nothing...because we really doubt their diagnosis but have not much choice :-(

Appreciate your help!

This depends on where the transmission fluid leak was coming from, if t was coming out of the transmission vent then yes the fix is to reprogram the PCM,if it was not,the fix is where it is coming from. P0732 if this was a closed out and not enough fluid getting through , the transmission should also exhibit no 2nd gear,3rd gear and 5th gear. But your only reporting one gear ratio code. When you got the truck back from the first shop, you need to inform them the transmission is acting up and not shifting right, the first shop who did the repair is responsible, have them recheck their repair. You have a loss of Transmission fluid pressure. you should be under their warranty.

it's described in the receipt from first repair like this: the transmission is leaking ATF out of bellhousing. Removed the trans and removed the torque converter, removed the pump, replaced the pump seal, gasket and torque convernter seal. installed with new bolts with seals, and installed new torque converter. replaced the hard output seal at the rear of the trans. installed and replaced the pan gasket and filter. filled with new mercon fluid. ran until normal OP. temp and test drove and verified no leaks at this time.

After the light blinked, we ran into ford shop, they explained like this: road tested 20 miles, find batter light and check changing system on under heavy accelerate. ran test P0732 - gear 2 wrong ratio. unable to duplicate concern but common cause is trans servo bores. require overhaul or trans replacement.
I went to 2nd shop, they explained me that based on the code, they guess servo bores closed out which cause insufficient fluid into trans. They didnt mention either reprogram or check the solenoid.

what should we do...looks like first shop did wrong recommendation to us that only simply replace the parts to fix the leaks. The second shop told me if he were in first inspection, he wouldn't do that. he would directly suggest me to overhaul the trans. Now we've spent 1700 in first shop per their diagnosis and the car can't run now.

Anyone familiar with Ford transmission knows there are problem with the servos. There is a factory bulletin about this, Its a common failure, If Ford can drive 20 miles and code up P0723 only. and unable to duplicate concern? If this was a servo damage you test drive around the block at operating temperature and the transmission shift concern  gets worse. In order to remove the transmission pump here are some of the steps you remove the transmission pan gasket ,transmission the transmission main control valve, and the transmission solenoid body . Somewhere in these step to remove the transmission pump or to assemble P0732 is the result of a transmission pump installation. Forget about reprogramming, Forget what Ford said, Rebuilding  this transmission is difficult even for the experience person.Work out some type of deal with the first shop to replace the solenoid body assembly,  This is only if P0732 is the only code appearing , and what do you mean car cant run now?
