When it is a pending code, The ECM measure the amount of time the fault occurs , When the fault occurs for a specific number of time it mature into a stored code and commands the Engine light to come on.

Store Codes = Means that there is an active stored in the Powertrain Control Module (PCM)

Pending Codes = Means that there are no codes pending stored in the PCM. "Pending Codes" are codes that are not active. Some codes require two trips or two starts to become active codes. After one trip or start, codes become "Pending Codes"; and after two trips or starts codes become active and the engine light will set.
