What should I do if the Malfunction indicator lamp stays on when I drive echo

the malfunction indicator lamp comes on when I drive my car and stays on. It sometimes idles high ride rough and lurches forward. I took it to the shop; they said it was overdue for an oil change. After oil change light still comes on. What is wrong/ Can it be fixed?

There are hundreds of reasons for the check engine light to come on. What you need to do is have the codes read. This will tell the tech the first place to start looking for the problem.
