I have a P1440 service engine code on my 2001 Nissan Maxima. The gas cap clicks on turning, but I am not sure if it is undamaged. How do I inspect the gas cap for damage?
If not the gas cap, how do I fix other problems which could potentially include EVAP Canister leak/fuel tank leak and several others? Replacing the gas cap ($10) seems to be the cheapest option. Please help!

You inspect the gas cap for damage by inspecting the rubber seal on the cap. If the seal is or deformed, then the problem is the cap. The P1440 code is for a "Small EVAP Leak" and small leaks are very difficult to found. If the cap is OK, the I suggest having a tech inspect your Maxima.

Thanks for the response. I did replace the gas cap as it appeared as if the rubber seal had cracked. However, the service engine soon light is still on! The tech at AutoZone told me that the light should reset on its own if the gas cap was the problem. Is this true or should I manually reset the light? I dont know how to manually reset the light. Thanks again!
