engine code P1440.

Question

There are many possible causes for code P1440. It was suggested by my mechanic to start out by replacing the EGR valve and the oxygen sensor. Wanted to know if there were less costly options to try first.

the first thing to do is replace the gas cap (factory gas cap is always better). The EGR has NOTHING to do with that code. If the problem is still there after replacing the gas cap check the EVAP hoses for cracked or broken hoses
