Will "check engine light" go out when problem is corrected?

In most instances the check engine light will not go out immeditly. The monitored systems have to run self tests before the light will go out. This is done with different drive cycles and timed by the ecm. All the correct conditions have to be met before it will even perform the self test. It will go out,but can take a very long time.
