I have a 97 Range Rover and getting code P1608. What is wrong?

Went for smog test. RR passed (emission etc.), but fault code P1608 came up. What could it be?

Vehicle: 1997 Land Rover - Range Rover 4.0 SE

P1608 is engine speed signal,or CKP its loosing its frequency,,If this sensor fails your vehicle will not start or run
