why did the check engine light come back on after cleaning egr valve on 2001 saturn sc1?

about a month ago cleaned egr and put new gasget. yesterday check engine light came on and code read p0404 egr flow ckt range performance. what can i do and how do i clear the codes? will the check engine light come on and stay on if that was the only code ? im lost. any help on what ny next steps shoud be would be greatly appreciated.
